‘This is a big moment for our city’: $136 million plan could bring 1,000 jobs to downtown Yonkers

Just across the Hudson River from Manhattan, the city of Yonkers is hoping to revitalize its downtown area with a new project that could bring 1,000 permanent jobs to the community.

Mayor Mike Spano announced the $136 million plan Tuesday, which includes a 20-story residential tower with 280 rental units, 20,000 square feet of retail space and a 1,300-space parking garage. It would be built in the city’s downtown waterfront district, which falls within the iPark Hudson development zone.

The waterfront district, which is about a 45-minute train ride from Midtown Manhattan, has been a priority for Spano. The city has already committed $17 million to upgrade infrastructure in the area.

The latest proposal, which still needs city council approval and state funding, is part of a larger plan to transform the downtown area into a vibrant residential and commercial hub. In 2016, the city approved zoning changes that allow for taller buildings and increased density in the district.
